چکیده

The worst situation in computing the minimal nonnegative solution of a nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation associated with an M-matrix occurs when the corresponding linearizing matrix has two very small eigenvalues, one with positive and one with negative real part. When both these eigenvalues are exactly zero, the problem is called critical or null recurrent. While in this case the problem is ill-conditioned and the convergence of the algorithms based on matrix iterations is slow, there exist some techniques to remove the singularity and transform the problem to a well-behaved one. Illconditioning and slow convergence appear also in close-to-critical problems, but when none of the eigenvalues is exactly zero the techniques used for the critical case cannot be applied. In this paper, we introduce a new method to accelerate the convergence properties of the iterations also in close-to-critical cases, by working on the invariant subspace associated with the problematic eigenvalues as a whole. We present a theoretical analysis and several numerical experiments which confirm the efficiency of the new method.

A subspace shift technique for solving close-to-critical nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations

The worst situation in computing the minimal nonnegative solution X∗ of a nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation R(X) = 0 associated with an M-matrix occurs when the derivative of R at X∗ is near to a singular matrix. When the derivative of R at X∗ is singular, the problem is ill-conditioned and the convergence of the algorithms based on matrix iterations is slow; however, there exist some tec...

On the Doubling Algorithm for a (Shifted) Nonsymmetric Algebraic Riccati Equation

Nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations for which the four coefficient matrices form an irreducible M -matrix M are considered. The emphasis is on the case where M is an irreducible singular M -matrix, which arises in the study of Markov models. The doubling algorithm is considered for finding the minimal nonnegative solution, the one of practical interest. The algorithm has been recently stud...

A discrete–time nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati system which incorporates as special cases various discrete–time nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations is introduced and studied without any restrictive assumptions on the matrix coefficients. Necessary and sufficient existence conditions together with computable formulas for the stabilizing solution are given in terms of proper deflating subspa...

Nonsymmetric Algebraic Riccati Equations and Wiener-Hopf Factorization for M-Matrices

We consider the nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation for which the four coefficient matrices form an M -matrix. Nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equations of this type appear in applied probability and transport theory. The minimal nonnegative solution of these equations can be found by Newton’s method and basic fixed-point iterations. The study of these equations is also closely related to th...

A Multishift Algorithm for the Numerical Solution of Algebraic Riccati Equations

Abstract. We study an algorithm for the numerical solution of algebraic matrix Riccati equations that arise in linear optimal control problems. The algorithm can be considered to be a multishift technique, which uses only orthogonal symplectic similarity transformations to compute a Lagrangian invariant subspace of the associated Hamiltonian matrix. We describe the details of this method and co...
